Ask five expats in Puerto Vallarta which bank to use and you’ll get five different answers \u2014 and lately, a couple of the old standbys are the wrong answer entirely. Opening an account here isn’t hard once you have the right documents, but the requirements shift depending on the branch, and one recent change has real consequences if you move money between Mexico and the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At minimum, expect to bring your passport, your residency card (temporal or permanente), and a utility bill or CFE statement dated within the last three months for proof of address. Most banks also want your RFC \u2014 but you don’t necessarily need the full version on day one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some banks will open your account with an “RFC gen\u00e9rico” \u2014 a placeholder tax ID \u2014 but they’ll typically give you 90 days to bring in your real RFC with the homoclave from SAT before restricting the account. As of February 2026, getting that real RFC also means a separate biometric CURP appointment at a RENAPO module, where your fingerprints and iris are scanned. This step happens after INM issues your residency card, and it is not done at the immigration office \u2014 plan for a second appointment, not a bonus stop on the same visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In June 2025, the US Treasury sanctioned Intercam and CIBanco, cutting both banks off from processing transfers to or from US accounts. If you’re wiring money from a US bank, receiving US retirement income, or just want the option later, an account at either of these banks will not do the job \u2014 some Puerto Vallarta clients found this out only when a transfer bounced. Confirm current sanctions status before opening anywhere unfamiliar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BBVA has the widest branch and ATM network in Puerto Vallarta and a solid app, though in-branch service for foreigners varies by location. Banorte, Mexico’s largest domestically-owned bank, tends to have a more straightforward onboarding process for new residents. Santander and HSBC both have a strong presence and decent digital tools. If you receive frequent international wires, Actinver is worth a look \u2014 it offers multi-currency accounts and doesn’t charge for incoming transfers, which matters if you’re still earning or drawing income from abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One requirement trips up more foreigners than any document on this list: banks in Mexico verify account openings and ongoing transactions with a one-time code sent by SMS, and that code has to land on a Mexican number. Showing up with only your US or Canadian cell \u2014 even with residency, RFC, and everything else in order \u2014 can stall the account before it opens, and it will keep causing headaches later with PIN resets and transaction confirmations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Getting a local number is inexpensive and doesn’t take long. A prepaid SIM from Telcel or AT&T M\u00e9xico \u2014 sold at their stores or at any OXXO \u2014 usually costs less than the equivalent of $100 USD for a year of basic service. If your phone supports eSIM, several carriers now offer that setup on the spot, no physical chip involved. Some internet providers, such as Izzi, throw in a phone line free with a home internet plan, which covers the same need if you’re already signing up for service at your new place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whichever route you pick, get the number active before your bank appointment, not after \u2014 it’s the one piece of the process that can’t be worked around from abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
