Puerto Vallarta works well for this, better than its beach-town reputation suggests. But two things routinely trip people up: the actual legal status you are on while you work, and the assumption that internet reliability is a solved problem everywhere in the city.

Mexico Has No Digital Nomad Visa — Here’s What People Actually Use

Despite years of speculation, Mexico has not created a dedicated digital nomad visa. There are two realistic paths, and they are not equivalent:

The tourist permit (FMM). Most short-term remote workers arrive this way. Worth understanding clearly: the tourist permit prohibits remunerated activity in Mexico. Working online for a foreign employer, paid into a foreign account, is what the vast majority of people do on this status and it sits in a grey area rather than a clearly authorized one. It also gives you no stability — the length of stay granted at the airport is at the officer’s discretion, and the 180-day figure people repeat is a maximum, not a guarantee.

Temporary residency (Residente Temporal). This is what functions as Mexico’s remote-worker visa. It is granted for one year and renewable up to four, applied for at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico, and approved based on proving income or savings thresholds. It is the difference between visiting repeatedly and actually living here.

Almost everything that makes daily life workable is downstream of residency: a bank account, a lease in your own name, utilities in your name, a Mexican driver’s license, importing a car long-term. If you plan to be here more than a few months a year, the residency route stops being optional fairly quickly.

Taxes are the part people get wrong most often. Mexico does not use a simple 183-day count to determine tax residency the way many countries do. Under Article 9 of the Federal Tax Code, it looks at where your permanent home is, and if you have homes in two countries, at where your center of vital interests sits. That means it is possible to be treated as a Mexican tax resident on worldwide income without hitting any particular day count — and equally possible to spend a lot of time here and not be. This is genuinely a question for a cross-border accountant, not a forum thread.

The Time Zone Is Better Than People Expect

Puerto Vallarta runs on Central Time and, since Mexico eliminated daylight saving in 2022, does not change clocks. The practical effect is a shifting offset: during U.S. summer months you are two hours behind the East Coast and matched to Mountain Time, and during U.S. winter you are one hour behind the East Coast and matched to Central. Either way you overlap the entire North American workday, which is why this coast draws remote workers who could not make Europe or Asia work.

The thing to actually calendar is not the offset — it is that your team’s meeting times will shift twice a year while yours stay fixed. Recurring calls that were comfortable in March land differently in November.

Where People Actually Work From

Home internet in the city is generally good, and fiber reaches most of the developed neighborhoods. What varies is the building, not the city: older condos with aging wiring, units where the only available provider is the one the building already contracted, and install waits that can run days to weeks. Verify the actual connection in the specific unit before signing a lease — not the provider’s coverage map.

Beyond that, the realistic options:

Coworking spaces. The city has several established ones, including Joint Coworking, Coworking Vallarta, and The Hive, with day passes and monthly memberships. Worth it mainly for the backup power, the meeting rooms, and the fact that you can take a call without a blender in the background.

Cafés. Plentiful and pleasant, but treat them as a change of scenery rather than an office. Bandwidth is shared, outlets are contested, and midday heat makes patio seating unworkable much of the year.

A mobile hotspot as backup. This is the single most useful thing on this list. Outages happen, and a Telcel or AT&T data plan on your phone is the difference between a rescheduled client call and a non-event.

Two practical realities worth planning around. Power cuts are not constant but they are not rare either, especially during rainy season — a laptop with real battery life and a small UPS for your router covers most of it. And the low season, roughly June through October, is hot and humid enough that air conditioning becomes a working expense rather than a comfort, which is a real line item in a home office budget.

¿Qué hacer a partir de aquí?

If the connection is what your income depends on, Getting Internet and Cable Set Up covers providers, install timelines, and realistic speeds in detail. And when you are ready to move past the tourist permit, Mexican Residency: Temporary vs Permanent walks through what the application actually requires.

This article is for general information only and is not immigration, legal, or tax advice. Immigration rules and tax residency criteria change, and individual situations differ substantially — confirm current requirements with a Mexican consulate and consult a qualified cross-border accountant before relying on any of this for your own situation.

México aún no cuenta con una visa para nómadas digitales, el permiso de turista es más complejo de lo que se cree y la residencia fiscal no se calcula en base a 183 días.
