Most newcomers treat getting a local SIM card as a minor errand. It’s not — in Mexico, your phone number quietly becomes the backbone of your entire digital identity, and losing access to it can be far more disruptive than it sounds.

Why It’s Tied to Everything

Mexican banking apps — BBVA, Banorte, and the rest — require a Mexican number for two-step verification, and they generally can’t send those codes to a foreign number at all. The same goes for government portals like SAT, for Uber and DiDi accounts, and for WhatsApp, which functions as the default communication channel for everything from your property manager to your doctor’s office here. If your number is tied to all of that and you lose it, you’re not just missing calls — you can lose access to banking, official accounts, and daily communication in one shot.

The 2026 Registration Requirement

Mexico now requires all +52 phone numbers to be registered using your passport and CURP by June 29, 2026, in order to keep the line active. If you’re getting a Mexican SIM, plan on completing this registration promptly — an unregistered line risks suspension, which cascades into every account tied to that number.

Practical Advice

• Get a Mexican SIM early, even if you keep a foreign number too — don’t wait until you need it for a bank account
• Complete the passport/CURP registration as soon as you activate the line
• Avoid changing numbers once your accounts are set up — migrating banking and WhatsApp verification to a new number is more friction than it looks like
• Keep your CURP and RFC handy, since carriers and banks alike will ask for them
