Tipping in Puerto Vallarta isn’t optional the way it can feel back home, but it’s also not a fixed 20% across the board. It changes by service, and getting it wrong in either direction — under-tipping or over-tipping because you weren’t sure — is one of the small frictions that trips up almost every new arrival.
Restaurants and Bars
In tourist-facing areas of Puerto Vallarta, 15–20% has become the norm, similar to the US. The catch: some restaurants and bars already add a 10–15% service charge (propina) directly to the bill, SO BE CAREFUL . Always check before tipping again on top of it — double-tipping is common among newcomers who don’t read the fine print.
Hotels
Housekeeping is typically tipped $1–$5 USD (in pesos) per night, left daily rather than as one lump sum at checkout — daily tips are more likely to reach the specific person who cleaned your room, since staff rotates.
Gas Stations and Grocery Baggers
Two spots that catch foreigners off guard because there’s no US equivalent: gas station attendants who pump your gas expect a small propina, and grocery store baggers work entirely on tips — there’s no hourly wage behind that job. 10 pesos per trip is the standard.
A Recent Shift Worth Knowing
Mexico’s federal consumer protection agency (PROFECO) has increased inspections in tourist zones including Puerto Vallarta and Tulum, specifically targeting businesses that pressure customers into tipping through coercive tactics — think forced service charges without disclosure, or staff pushing back on a lower tip. If it happens to you, you’re not overreacting; it’s a known enough problem that regulators are actively responding to it.
