One of the more disorienting realities for new arrivals: you don’t get reliable mail delivered to your door here the way you might back home. It’s not that Mexico lacks a postal service — Correos de México has operated for centuries and still runs offices across the country — it’s that home delivery, address consistency, and package tracking simply don’t work the same way, so almost everyone routes around it.
Why Home Delivery Isn’t Reliable
Correos does deliver, often by motorbike and sometimes on foot in older neighborhoods, but coverage and consistency vary block by block. Addresses here are built around street name, number, and colonia (neighborhood) rather than a standardized system a carrier can always match instantly, and many delivery routes simply don’t reach every building reliably. The practical result: most residents treat Correos as fine for the occasional government letter or utility notice, but nobody expects a package ordered online to show up at their door through the postal service alone.
If something is mailed to you and delivery isn’t available at your address, it can usually be held “en Lista de Correos” (general delivery) at the local post office — Puerto Vallarta’s is at Calle Colombia 1014 in El Centro — and picked up in person with ID.
Private Mailbox Services
This is why private mailbox services exist, and why most long-term expats end up using one. In Puerto Vallarta, iShop & Mail (in Plaza Península, hotel zone) is the name people mention most — it offers a real street address with a suite number, handles USPS-origin mail, and works with FedEx, UPS, DHL, Estafeta, and Red Pack for shipping. Mailbox rental runs around USD 35/month. Staff there are used to working with English-speaking clients and can advise on the cheapest reliable way to ship something specific.
Some expats also keep a US-based mailbox with a forwarding service near the border (San Diego/Tijuana and Laredo-area services are common) for anything ordered from US retailers that won’t ship to Mexico directly, then have it forwarded or picked up on a border run. It’s an extra step, but it solves the “this store won’t ship internationally” problem completely.
Couriers for Anything That Actually Matters
For anything time-sensitive or valuable — documents, electronics, gifts — skip the postal service entirely and use a courier. FedEx, DHL, UPS, Estafeta, and Red Pack all operate in Puerto Vallarta, several offering pickup from your home or hotel with about 24 hours’ notice. Costs start around USD 30 for a small package and scale with weight and speed. Tracking is real and reliable, which is the main thing you’re paying for.
What This Looks Like Day to Day
- Online shopping generally means Mercado Libre or Amazon México, both of which ship domestically far more reliably than a US retailer shipping across the border.
- Building staff or a doorman often ends up as the de facto delivery point in apartment buildings and gated communities — couriers hand off to whoever answers, so let your building know to expect packages if you’re not always home.
- WhatsApp, not email, is how most local delivery coordination actually happens — drivers text or call when they’re close, and having a Mexican number (or WhatsApp on your existing number) makes deliveries go noticeably smoother.
