Moving to Puerto Vallarta, or spending the winter here, changes your daily rhythm. You walk more, you take stairs and cobblestone streets, and you spend more time outdoors. Staying strong and steady makes all of that easier and safer. That is why I put together a free, illustrated guide of simple exercises you can do at home, with a chair, a wall, and very little equipment.
Important: this article is general information, not medical advice, and I am not a doctor or physiotherapist. Please check with your physician before starting any exercise program, especially if you have a heart condition, joint replacement, back problems, balance problems, or any health concern.
Why strength and balance matter after 65
Everyday tasks, such as getting out of a chair, climbing steps, carrying groceries, or walking on uneven pavement, depend on leg strength, balance, and flexibility. Health organizations such as the World Health Organization and the U.S. CDC recommend that older adults include muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days a week, plus balance work, alongside regular walking. The guide is built around that simple pattern.
What is inside the guide
The guide has 37 illustrated cards, written in English and Spanish on every page, so it is easy to share with family, friends, or the person who helps you at home.
- Before you start and stop signs: what to avoid if you have a sensitive back or a knee replacement, and when to stop and call your doctor.
- A simple weekly plan: two strength days, daily walks, and a few minutes of stretching every day.
- Daily stretches: ten gentle stretches for neck, shoulders, back, hips, and legs, plus a balance exercise you do next to a wall.
- Strength Day 1 (legs and balance): chair squat, step-up, glute bridge, calf raise, band hip abduction, sit-to-stand, and heel-to-toe walk.
- Strength Day 2 (arms, back, and core): seated band row, seated shoulder press, wall push-ups, biceps curl, band triceps, band face pull, standing bird dog, suitcase carry, and table plank.
- Food, water, and rest: practical habits around protein, hydration, and sleep.
How to use it safely
Start with the lighter version: two sets instead of three, and light weights or none at all. Keep a sturdy chair or a wall within reach, move slowly, and breathe the whole time. Mild muscle effort is normal. Dizziness, chest pain, sharp joint pain, or unusual shortness of breath are not, so stop and speak with your doctor.
